Where should I start? – Suggested first mods
One of the hardest things for new buggy owners to decide on is where to start when they want to make improvements to their buggy. We’re going to make that decision easier by suggesting some of the most common modifications and describe what they will do for you!
What do you want your vehicle to do?
First off, it’s important to know what you want the vehicle to do that it’s not doing now.
What kind of terrain will you be riding in?
– Flat, wide open areas where you can really get up to higher speeds?
– Tight trails where low end power and acceleration are needed?
– Serious climbing of steep hills or rock crawling?
– Combinations of all of these?
The answers to those questions will help determine how to properly “tune” your vehicle to drive its best in those environments!
The different engine systems
At BPNW we divide the engine into three different systems for the purposes of modding: Air / Fuel System; Transmission (CVT variator and clutch); and Electrical. These systems are reflected in how the products in the store are arranged so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.

What mods are right for me?
Now that you’ve done some homework and understand better how the different systems work together, here’s some suggested modifications that really give you major “bang for the buck”.
First stage mods:
– This upgrade is highly recommended for ALL buggies. Removing the stock airbox and replacing it with a free-flowing two-stage UNI filter will significantly increase the amount of airflow through your engine. Installation of the UNI is as simple as tightening a screw on a clamp (once you have removed the stock airbox). Changing the main jet in your carburetor will be necessary, but is easily accomplished using this tutorial.
– This combination is a winner for improving low end power, acceleration, and fast downshifting when cornering for more power when you “punch it”!
– For 150cc buggies that want better overall performance without sacrificing top speed, we recommend 11g or 12g sliders and a yellow main spring. For more low end acceleration and climbing power go for 9g or 10g slider weights and a yellow main spring. Note: the lighter the slider weight, the more low end power you gain, but you may lose some top speed.
– For 250cc buggies that want better overall performance without sacrificing top speed, we recommend 19g or 21g sliders and a red main spring. For more low end acceleration and climbing power go for 15g or 17g slider weights and a black main spring. Note: Same as the 150cc, the lighter the slider weight, the more low end power you gain, but you may lose some top speed.
There are only a few electrical mods that are available for the buggies: CDI, Coil, and Spark Plug. We recommend upgrading them all. Click to see the packages we have available for 150cc and 250cc buggies.
The performance CDI ignition modules that we sell do not have 5500 RPM limiters that many stock CDIs come with. They provide better, more consistent spark from higher quality wiring and components and give overall stability and solid power how your engine runs.
Our performance coils deliver significantly higher power to the spark plug, over 200% in some cases! This means a more complete combustion of the air and fuel inside the cylinder combustion chamber and more power from every spark!
The Iridium spark plugs are the same high quality, long lasting type as are used in top-end high performance sports car engines.
These are the mods that we recommend that everyone start with, as they are generally inexpensive and provide a lot of bang for your buck.
There are a great many more modifications that you can do, from performance exhausts to clutches and variators, to carburetor and big bore kits. Where you go from here depends on your needs and budget.
